Hi Bryan,
Is this an British guardsman or a Canadian one?
I would have thought British one's had embroidered collar badges.

Anyway to answer your question from a British viewpoint.
The Grenadier Guards (First foot guards) wear their butons singularly -like the man in your photo.
The Coldstream Guards (Second foot guards) wear theirs in pairs.
The Scots Guards (Third foot guards) in group of three.
Later than this photo from 1900 the Irish Guards in groups on four & the Welsh Guards from 1915 in groups of five.

On the Canadian side,
The Canadian Grenadier Guards single spacing
The Governor General's Foot Guards buttons in pairs.

Hope someone can provide a positive answer to the nationality.
All the best,
Alan.

Thank you for yr detailed response Alan.

I am certain the photo is of a British Guardsman, I got it in UK. I think the British Guards officers have enbroidered collars. But I am not knowledgable enough to know of specifics.

However, it never occurred to me it might be Canadian. I know we have Guards Regiments & I am aware of the two you mention, & know their uniforms are very similar to their British counterparts, but I am unaware of specific differences there might be in the uniform. I think the Grenadier Guards were a star on their collars(?). Hopefully someone can enlighten us.

Bryan

The only thing I can say for certain is that this soldier is not from any of the British Guards Regiments. This uniform is entirely different from that worn by any of the Guards at any time in their history.
I dont recognize this uniform from any other regular British Army regiment either.

I would suggest Royal Marine Light Infantry in full dress.

Take a look at this:

Marine LI is as good a guess as any other.
I would say, or guess, that it could be one of a number of Light Infantry Regts from the 1860's on.
Dark green or even red facings could appear black or blue.

Yes dark facings could appear black or Blue, Not a wild guess though. Most LI regiments had distinctions, White cuffs or Pointy Cuffs or Frilly Cuffs, or collar badges.
