Madras Light Dragoons - 19th Century beauty!
I gather this belonged to my late cousin's great grandfather, Charles Harrington Graeme, who was a Colonel in the 5th Madras Light Infantry, later to become Major General. He died in Paris in 1868, aged 63. If anyone can shed any light on this badge/shako plate, I'd appreciate it very much. It is just over 6 inches by just over 4 inches.
Thanks Alex |

Hi Alex
I don't wish to be pedantic, but this badge is in fact of the 5th Madras Light Dragoons shako plate c.1830 to 1855, (not Light Infantry) the cypher being MLC (for Madras Light Cavalry). This regiment was present at Assaye 1803 as indicated by the elephant and honour below the crown. A beautiful badge as you say to a spendid regiment. Regards. LtD shako plate another example
PS:
Here is a typical example of the type of Light Dragoons (Light Cav) shako of the same period as yours. This one is 14th Lt.Dragoons. Regards Jeff 14 LtD c.1830-45.jpg |
