Boer War Sweethearts?
Picked these up today at a coin shop on a whim. The Borough of Portsmouth is marked South Africa 1900-1 on the back... the large badge has a jewllers proof? and the date 1902... the small badge is marked sterling... due to the dating Boer War connected? thanks JIM ps the pictures turned on me and my kid is not here to straighten them out... not sure why they came out that way.

Hello Jim.....
The large golden one is a piece of Jewelry, note province of BC crest in center, I also think that the other piece is jewelry also..... The Portsmouth one is Boer War...... And very very desirable...... There are 3 versions: 1st Reverse SOUTH AFRICA 1900-1 2nd Reverse NAVAL BRIGADE - SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1900 AND NORTH CHINA 1900 3rd Reverse NORTH CHINA 1900 They were presented by the County / Borough / City of Portsmouth to Captain Scott and the Officers and Crew of HMS Terrible on their return from the Boer War and North China. If you served only in South Africa you got type One, South Africa and North China type Two and of course 3rd reverse if you were only with the ship for the North China expedition..... According to Hibbards Authenticity and Rarity Table this Tribute Medal is classified as Scarce 11 to 25 of all types known to exist...... I have both Type 1 and 2 in my collection and a Type 2 sold on ebay in 2007 for the sum of 175 Pounds Sterling but it was in mint condition in box and had certificate to match....... Hope this is of some help...... Mike

Good Morning Bill......
In 1982 a book entitled Boer War Tribute Medals was published by M. G. Hibbard which lists most but not all of the Tribute Medals issued for the South African War...... It is a limited edition of 1500 copies, No.'s 1-200 were hard cover and collectors editions (mine is #86) and the rest just hard cover numbered....... They do show up on ebay about once every 2 or 3 years......... Hardcover: 240 pages Publisher: Constantia Classics (1982) Language: English ISBN-10: 0620058714 ISBN-13: 978-0620058711 See: http://www.amazon.com/Boer-War-tribu...6215059&sr=1-2 In this book there is an appendix which is the Authenticity and Rarity Table..... Note though this is as of 1982...... So more of the Portsmouth Medallions may have been found by now..... Also I have one welcome home medal that in the book it states is rumored to exist but none have been found..... Well I have one....... It is not good on the Canadian medals and only lists one...... If you are interested in Canadian Medals / Medallions / Badges the best book is Canadian Welcome Home Medals 1899-1945 by George A. Brown, again it is a limited edition of 1000 copies...... Again there are a few errors and ommissions which is to be expected...... Both books are great reference materiels..... Mike

Thanks Mike. Not exactly my line of collecting, but good to know. The Brown book I have perused a couple of times and it is well worth the money.
