Hi Jon,

World War I West Kent Yeomanry.

I don't know if they are rare but they are certainly repro'd quite a lot !!!

Dave.

As Dave has ID'ed above your badge is The West Kent Yeomanry (Queen's Own). Worn upto 1920, alas I suspect yours, like the majority of the others you have posted is a copy.

I've shown below what I believe is an original (left) next to a copy (right).

IMO this is one of the easier copies to distinguish from an original, there are many visual differences here are just a few:

*The copy has a very upright horse whereas the original leans forward.
*The head on the copy looks forward and on the original looks upwards
*The two front legs on the copy are separate and link on the original
*The base scroll on the copy is shorter/narrower.
*Short uniform slider on the copy and a nice long tappered one on the original.

(I do not collect Police badges however the copy seems to be very similar to that worn a one time to the Kent Constabulary, the fakers have copied the wrong badge methinks!!)

Hope you did not pay too much for the badges? Can you post pictures of the 21st Lancers ones?

Andy

There was or is a Cadet type unit that wears that badge, I am sure I have seen them at the 'War and Peace Show'.

Hi Andy, and others,
Thanks for the details of genuine and false WKY badges.
Here are mine. From what you have said, it seems that the one on the right is a fake, but note the differences in the pattern and the J.R.GAUNT LONDON mark.
Your comments would be welcomed.
Thanks, Tinto

Tinto,
the badge stopped being worn on amalgamation in 1920, I am certain that the large Gaunt London, style of marking, as on your badge is a far later mark? I do not know the date but have a feeling it is around post WW2? It may be a cadet unit as mentioned above, although the depth and style of the mark itself looks rather feint! The other option is that it is a copy!

Andy
