Tony,

I have never seen one and even Gaylor's list (somewhat questionable) does not mention one. Personally I don't think they were made. Firstly the numbers required must have been very low for a single regiment. Secondly I stilll have yet to see a one-piece version of a tagged scroll badge that I belive is actually a true 1916 economy badge.

Tony.

One thing missing is the anodised aluminium version which is shown in Peter Taylor's book Collecting anodised aluminium badge but not mentioned in Kipling and King.

They certainly exist but it seems doubtful that the 3rd hussars ever wore them. Were they issued, made but not issued and sold off or a fake made for the collectors market?
What is your view?

Alan

Default AA 3rd Hussars cap badge

Hi Alan,

With reference to the AA badge 3rd Hussars. The story I herd ( Ex QOH) that

back in 1985 the QOH had its Tercentenary . The regiment ordered badges

for this event, when they turned up last minuite ! . The badges

read 3rd Hussars not "The Queen's Own Hussar "

These were sold in the PRI shop Catterick Garrison for wait for it £1 Yes ONE whole pound.

The 3rd Hussars never wore a AA Cap badge.

That's why I don't have an example in my 3rd/4th QOH collection.

Regards

Tony,

That is very interesting especially considering the prices some dealers are asking for them. I am pretty sure that the 3rd Kings own Hussars were not wearing a/a when they amalgamated.

The only thing I don't understand is why the QOH would want to order the same a/a badges, that were available from official sources and worn by the common soldiery, for a tercentenary (unless they actually wanted to get 3rd Kings Own Hussars a/a badges to sell to the old boys as commerative items?).

Many thanks

Alan

Hi Alan,

I have done some reserch reference this badge, I have tracked down the name of the PRI manager at the time . Iam confident that he will have all the info on the said badge . All I have to do now is to track him down.I last saw this chap 4yrs ago.

Tony,

I'm not so sure about your ORs slidered version. It has the the thin deep dipping scroll in the centre, the thin ground which the horse is riding upon and the very smooth swan neck shape on the inside curl of the horses head/neck all of which you get with the restrikes.

I believe the slidered version should be exactly the same as your lugged version to the left (which is a lovely example btw) just with a slider in stead of lugs.

Default 3rd Hussars

Hi there, thank you for your comments on the 3rd Hussar Or's slider striking badge. But I have to disagree with you hear . At first I thought this was an officers pattern with a slider fixing . I had this silver tested ! not Silver . Of the 25yrs of collecting I have only ever seen seen one of this quality . Including examples in collections of the Cavarly specialist in the UK . If your require close up and higher pic pixels photo drop me an E-mail. PS if you ever see one of better qual I will pay hundreds for it . but I doubt this would happen.

Hi Tony,

Have just checked out the dodgey ones on ebay and I believe I was wrong, I was judging the central dip in your scroll against the other pattern to the left which is a lot shallower, there are die differences with regards to the thickness of the scroll and horses mane. So I take back my earlier thoughts.

And yes I agree 100% it does have a really lovely patina.

Regards,

Luke

Hi there, this type of bullion badge was worn from as early as 1898 up to 1958, how old your one was depends on the horse pattern within the garter.
A pic of this badge would be helpfull in finding out its age !
If you have any other 3rd 4th 7th 8th Hussar interesting items you would like to trade Iam your man.
Loads of Genuine Cav Badges Yes Genuine not your normal run of the mill .bay crap

Cheers !
