Default D Troop or Commando depot?

H all, anyone able to answer the following?

Below are two image of what appears to be the same badge, both reproductions. one has a white skull in a light blue D on a green square and is made by Divpatch for the re enactment world and is described as Quote: "D Troop Commandos, This badge has actually been given the OK from the brave men who wore it for real!"

The other image is of a pair of badges of a white skull in a white D and is of a type sold all over ebay and elsewere and described as "Commando Depot".

However in the book Commandos and Rangers of WW2 by James Ladd, a very respected authority on the Royal Marines and WW2 Commandos he states on page 18, Commando and Ranger shoulder flashes:
"Black Square with white D and skull worn by Depot staff".

So are they two different badges worn by two seperate units or two variants of the same badge worn at different times by different units?

All sensible, informed answers gratefully recieved.

Regards Tony

Default Depot badge

Guido Rosignoli in his book "Army badges and insignia of world war 2" refers to the black and white "D and skull" as Depot. I had a booklet years ago which was published I think by The Commando Assn. which also gave this badge as being worn by the depot.

The "D troop" skull which I think was embroidered on khaki is a very rare badge, I think it holds the record for a price realised by a cloth badge.

There is also the "cracked skull" badge which was produced in metal early on during WWII. This was probably a design that was put forward for a badge but never adopted. An article on this I think appeared in the MHS journal some years ago.

Election, what election?

Seriously though, see this thread on the same subject - http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ad.php?t=62418

I take it you do not believe the badge sold is original - I don't have a clue!

I do hope you see this is one of the most desirable of cloth insignia? It went for over 3000 pounds. It is not the best of condition but give the guy or woman a break that it may be the very last of this persons hit-list of insignia,

So is it genuine? Or not?
It's beyond my abilities to tell, which is why I'll never be spending that kind of figure on such a badge.

Its fake,

look at the rear of it, its been subjected to the same distressing process that has occurred on the front. Cloth badges just dont age like that is supposed to have particularly on both sides.

Thanks button (Staring at small images on phone isn't showing me a lot).
Oh well, honest bidding or not, that sale should drastically increase the desirability and cost of fakes then.

Not sure why we're debating it further, it's clearly a div patch repro and has several clear differences to a known original posted elsewhere on this forum.

I'm not debating - as someone with no knowledge of the subject I'm simply asking - good or bad?
It's bad, thanks for the clarification.

For what's it's worth I've just ordered one from Divpatch and will post photos on here when it arrives to help others with four grand in their back pocket!

If it was original, the price is consistent with others that have gone through reputable auction houses, which can be found with a bit of googling.

Sadly if a real one did come up I wouldn't be able to afford it, but I'd sure love to have a real one in my collection. Sometimes you just have to accept with this hobby that we will never actually be able to 'complete' our collections

True, and that includes currently worn badges introduced in the last couple of years. Some times WW2 badges are easier to get.
