Civilian Military Govt slip-ons
The Civilian Military Govt slip-ons were issued for officers of the Civil Affairs and Military Government staffs. These staffs were attached to First Canadian Army HQ and 2nd Corps HQ, and served in NW Europe. There were at least 279 officers on establishment by the fall of 1944. They were employed in areas such as Administration (of civil affairs), Financial, Legal, Labour, Supply, Food and Engineering Services. These officers assisted the liberated areas of France Belgium and Holland with reconstruction and the re-establishment of civil authority.
The insignia usually associated with the Civil Affairs officers is the yellow on green slip-on. The black on dark green is not found as often. There is not much photo evidence of the Civil Affairs officers at work, and it is difficult to determine exactly what was the norm. Examples of the black on green slip-on have been found showing evidence of wear.
Conjecture. The commonly found slip-on reads CIVILIAN / MIL GOV / OFFICER, while the example pictured is CIVILIAN / MIL GOV. This plain pattern may be for members of the Civil Affairs staff who were not military officers. (Civilians emoployed in reconstruction or other ranks who were attached.)
