Default What type Shako is this?

Hi gents, it's the actual hat I'm interesed in, I know it's the wrong badge etc. What type of Shako is it? Someone suggested an 1869 Shako, or sometimes called or known as "The Last Shako".

That is not a British Military shako.

It has the appearance of a US Cavalry kepi.

This is not a US Army kepi or shako.

The following reference books will confirm this.

It was worn by Prison Warders and some Police Constabulary's used it as well. The ones I've seen in Victorian military use have all kinds of plumes and different braids on them, depending on the Regiment I suppose.

I would suggest that the military shako it most resembles is as you say, the last shako 1869-78.

A similar headdress was worn in the past by Postmen.

Cheers P.B, that sounds about right to me - if only I could get a repro now!
