Default 2 RAR Freedom of Entry to the City of Townsville Parade

2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (2 RAR) was in fine form as they exercised the Freedom of Entry to the City of Townsville on Friday 2nd of September along the Strand from Anzac Park to Jezzine Barracks.
2 RAR was originally granted the Freedom of the City of Townsville in 1971 as a result of the close association between the citizens of Townsville and members of the Battalion.

The ceremony of Freedom of Entry is one of the oldest military traditions. The granting of Freedom of Entry dates back to medieval times when armed bodies of men were challenged before being permitted to enter a city. Today, the privilege of Freedom of Entry to a city is a ceremonial event, and is the highest honour a city can extend to a unit of the Armed Forces as a symbol of mutual respect, trust and confidence.

During the granting ceremony, the unit is challenged, with the traditional call by a senior police officer, representing civil authority. The unit CO will respond and show the officer the scroll from the civil authority authorising Freedom of Entry. The officer will then permit the unit to pass.

A good picture of the RAR Glengarry badge being worn by the Adjutant. Also worn by the Pipes and Drums of 2RAR.

Enjoy!

Mick

The 1RAR, 3RAR and 4th Field Regiment Museums in Lavarack Barracks are also worth visiting though getting access into the barracks can be problematic without an escort.
