RAC - Light Cavalry Band hat badge
Light Cavalry Band hat badge
The Light Cavalry Band was formed in June 2006 following the 'Future Army Structure' which caused a reorganisation of the Corps of Army Music. The band is one of two Royal Armoured Corps bands and is based in Bovington, Dorset. The band principally supports the following regiments: The Queen's Royal Hussars, The King's Royal Hussars, The Light Dragoons, The 9/12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's) and the Queen's Royal Lancers. Originally the regiments and their respective bands were mounted on horseback, a tradition which ceased during the 1930s upon mechanisation. Cavalry Regiments have fought in almost every conflict from Waterloo and Balaclava (The Charge of the Light Brigade) to the Twentieth century battles of the Somme, El Alamein and more recently the 1st and 2nd Iraq Conflicts. Alongside providing musical support to the Field Army, the band also has a military role. Musicians served during OP Granby (the first Gulf conflict) and OP Agricola in Kosovo as medical assistants. More recently they served during OP Telic in their current operational role of CDA (Chemical Decontamination Area) support to the Defence Medical Services. Musicians also provided support for OP Fresco, the Fire Service strike in 2002. Since formation the band has had a busy period performing for the Sultan of Brunei's 60th Birthday celebrations in Brunei and providing musical support to the Field Army in Germany and Belgium. Closer to home the band performed at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party, provided musical support to the Light Dragoons for their presentation of OP Telic medals by their Colonel in Chief the King of Jordan and participated in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2007. 2008 has been another very busy year for the Band and 2009 will bring new challenges and more events to support around the world. light cavalry band badge
I wonder if you can help me since you appear to have some knowledge of, or at least interest in, the light cavalry band (?). I can't, for the life of me find out what insignia are worn by the band on their full dress busby(?). I have emailed and written to the band at Bovington but they have ignored my messages. I have unclear photos of the bandsmen/women and the busby seems to have a badge but I can't make out its details - could it be the badge you have shown? Similarly there apears to be a plume but, again, I can't make out details of its shape/colour. HELP

Appearances can be deceptive
I don't know much about them I'm afraid. I just found that information via google. Mick

Re Light Cavalry Band
Hi Mick
Thanks for the post I have not seen this badge previously. I know when the band appears in support of the Queens Royal Lancers it wears full dress in the uniforms of the 4 constituant regiments and wears the lance cap plates of all four regiments. Hope that this helps. Regards Phil. |

Hi,
I'm not certain but I think the badge shown by Mick is the Service Dress cap badge, I will, no doubt, be corrected, I have the collars in my ' Bands ' album. Dave. |

Hi signalman,
Probably the right band but not the right badge, at least the one first shown by slickmick isn't a pouch badge. No one has come in to say if I am right or wrong about it being a cap badge, I would like confirmation for my own needs ?? Dave. |

I was under the impression the badge I posted was a cap badge. It has two lugs on the back.
