Default Pals Books

Hi All,

I am looking to get some books detailing a few of the Pals Battalions I am interested in.

After some initial poking around Amazon and Military Press, I have come up with these:

Liverpool Pals - Graham Maddocks
Birmingham Pals - Terry Carter
Manchester Pals - Michael Steadman

Could the "Pals" experts here make comment as to whether these books are a good place to start?

Thanks as always,

Tim

Yes, They are an excellent series of books.
Well worth it.

Many of the badges in Michael Steadman's book are mine.

There are two editions of the late Graham Maddocks book "Liverpool Pals ", the original large paperback format by Leo Cooper and the smaller hardback edition by Pen and Sword.

The contents are identical and the smaller hardback book is easier to use and, I don't know if it is still the case, but copies could be picked up for a few pounds.

It is a well researched and illustrated book.

If you are interested, there are books on The Hull Pals (DavidBilton) and on The Leeds Pals (Stephen Woods). Both are also available on Abebooks.

I found this book very interesting, no badge, but mentions all the Bantam battalions even the Canadian battalions.

Cheers and thanks, but as a tragic Beatles fan, I sadly can't comply...

Thanks Peter

Tim,

It was not an intended slight on the Beatles, I did got to the same Primary School as John Lennon but not at the same time and I was annoyed when, following the death of Cilla Black, the T.V. news was full of pictures of the present Cavern Club with the implication that that was were she and The Beatles performed

It is not the Cavern Club where the Beatles performed nor the Cavern Club that I went to when I sagged off school but this is defiantly moving away from militaria and military history.

I did know Graham Maddocks though, he was the Chairman of the Liverpool/ Merseyside Branch of the Military Historical Society ( when there was one ) in the early 1970`s

Peter
