Imperial Yeomanry Badges & Numerals
Hi All
How many collectors on the forum have the original "Imperial Yeomanry" badge or brass numerals? The original badge is very small and approx 2.5cm by 2.5cm, the same badge was worn as collar badges by Yeoman that returned from SA. An original IY rosette with badge. Not to be confused with the Wiltshire Imperial Yeomanry, the "Imperial Yeomanry" also wore a red and purple silk rosette to be worn on the slouch hat and this carried a gilt badge of the prince of Wales feathers and IY. Wiltshire Yeomanry rosette. Imperial Yeomanry Numerals:- The Numeral & rosette of the 7th (1st Leics Yeo) Coy, 4th Btn IY. ** The 65th (2nd Leics Yeo) Coy, 17th Btn had a rosette that was Blue on the outer and red on the inner with the brass numerals 6 & 5. Hi Bill
Sadly not, I wish they were though. The 7th Rosette is actually "the" badge that belonged to Lt. The Hon PC Evans-Freke who died in WW1 commanding the LY PAO at Frezenberg Ridge, this is still owned by the Great grandson of the Colonel. The other badges I have copied from ebay sales..... the Wilstshire Yeomanry Rosette was sold under the ambiguous title of "Imperial Yeomanry"...... not wrong and a general description but technically wrong for the badge itself. Griff,
It is called " Regimental Patches Worn during the South African War 1899-1902" Part 10= The Imperial Yeomanry which describes very well what it is about. It includes an illustration of your 4th Bn ( 7th leicestershire Co) IY and gives as sources for that particular badge Ex Rutland County Museum and MHS August 1999 P.B.

Many thanks for that, the "7th" badge that I show is actually held by the family...... I do know that the Rutland Mues' has articles from other Rutland men that served in the 7th. The family also have The Hon. PC Evans-Freke's Imperial Yeomanry Folding Field Service cap as well..... I have actually had it in my own grubby mits along with many items from his Boer War chest. It's incredible to hold items that you have only ever seen in books.... plus it confirms colours, size and material. Best regards Griff M-J |

Great photo, excellent condition rosette and badge. Now I would say that was a Wiltshire Imperial Yeomanry rosette because of the POW badge.
