Good day Phillip,

Yes, they're good. From the backing, I'd say they are the initial issue. Later examples started to have a type of sealed back. The one on the right was worn on the CF green Service Jacket on both shoulders. The one on the left was worn on both shoulders of the DPM material, jump smock, worn first by the late Canadian Airborne Regiment (CABR)and later by the Special Service Force (SSF).

First, let's be correct about the unit's name. It is Joint Task Force 2 (JTF 2). As for why it is called that? Maybe to keep everyone guessing. But, to answer your question, NO, there never was a JTF 1.

When the CF took over counter-terrorism from the Mounties, a couple of senior types took a trip to the US to observe a combined military/law enforcement unit called Joint Task Force Four in their anti-drug smuggling operations. They liked the sound of the title so much, that when they got back and starting forming the new unit, they chose "JTF 2" for the official name.

And I don't think it was ever called TWO SSF. Just SSF.

Default SSF and JTF2

Special Service Force

On April 1, 1977, 2 Combat Group was disbanded and the Special Service Force was officially formed at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa. The Force derived its name from the First Special Service Force, a historic formation of Americans and Canadians nicknamed “The Devil’s Brigade” during the Second World War.

The Special Service Force was intended to fulfill a dual role: the first, as a highly mobile rapid reaction formation capable of executing peacetime missions, and the second, in times of war, it would form the core of a standard brigade group.

Brigade soldiers’ involvement in United Nations and NATO operations during the 1990s was extensive. Ranging from the Persian Gulf War (1990-1991), Cambodia (1992), Cyprus (1964-1993) the Balkans (1992-2003) Somalia and Rwanda (1994-1996).

By a Ministerial Order on April 24, 1995, the Special Service Forces was officially re-designated as 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (2 CMBG).

JTF2

JTF 2 was created on April 1, 1993, when the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) accepted responsibility for federal counter-terrorism operations from the RCMP's Special Emergency Response Team (SERT).

This is the SERT Badge.
