Default Family Military History

Tonight I was browsing Ancestry when I noticed that Military records for WW1 could be viewed without cost for this weekend only. I was able to view all of the service records as well as Medal Roll records without cost for all members of my family who took part in WW1....,, at no cost whatsoever. I wondered if other members of the forum might find this service useful.....but remember it is for this weekend only.

After some considerable thought, I finally signed up to Ancestry on Friday, I am only sorry I didn't do so a lot earlier.

Some of the stuff I have found out about my family history is incredible. On the militaria front, a local antique dealer who offers any militaria he gets to me, phoned me about a WW1 pair and I was able to find the recipients Medal Index Card in less that a minute.

What a fantastic resource.

I think it's a damn shame that people have to pay for UK records that should be free.

Makes me grateful that the Australian WW1 and WW2 records are all free.

Just be sure you take notice of this..

Free trial requires registration with a valid credit or debit card. Unless you cancel before the end of your free trial, your chosen membership will begin and you'll be charged the relevant price.

If you get to Ancestry and they ask you to set up an account for a free trial, you can do so and ensure you cancel membership as noted in the above post. However, you can avoid doing that by doing the following :
I managed to circumvent that by typing in search.ancestry.co.uk.......using the instructions on Ancestry for the free viewing weekend, I hasten to add...
The search facility came up.....you can only search UK records for free...eg. Census or military. When tried to access records, they asked for eMail and asked you to set up a password. The free viewing ends at 23.59 tonight and did not have to register any credit or debit card.
