Comrades of the Great War
I have just won a copy of a small publication dated October 1918 for next to nothing ( well £2 actually ) on E bay. Originally costing one penny, the publication is described as "The West Lancashire Organ of the Discharged Men " and a lot of the articles seem to be aimed at letting discharged men know their rights.
I don't know if the publication is connected to the "Comrades of the Great War " who`s button hole badges you often come across but there is a note on page 5 saying that " Sir Douglas Haig was the first to be enrolled as honorary life comrade of the Comrades of the Great War ". Amongst the adverts is one from a firm called Maurice Eschwege of 47 Lime Street, Liverpool which offers- " Lost War medals restored and renamed, all kinds of foreign money exchanged " It appears that renamed WW1 veterans medals have been around for at least the last 100 odd years. ( I seem to recall buying a Liverpool Pals silver badge from Browns in London Road ( who`s advert is on the front cover ) longer ago than I care to remember.) P.B.
