Identification help please
Can anyone identify the cloth patch above this soldier's strips? The visible part seems to contain a large letter L.

ID help
Hi
I suspect this is a trade badge, and the lower line maybe part of a wreath, as I think the faint top line is. In between there would be a letter, but from this photo its very difficult to say what it is. Also, I'm fairly sure its not an NCO's arm badge as on BD's that would not be embroidered. This is just my oppion of course and I hope it helps. Regards Rob |

Do you know if he was a gunner by chance?

It's not an 'L' but the 'trail' of a Gun Badge as worn above stripes by Sgts in the RA. The gun is white worsted on khaki backing.

Possibly ... but it's not the trail of the gun. The muzzle must face forward!

Apologies to you RA guys for my inexpertise, but I assume if it was a "Layer" badge, it would be lower down the sleeve?

Thanks to all who replied. The daughter of the man concerned has just emailed me to say that, following a search of her mother's loft, she has established that he was in the Royal Artillary. I don't suppose it is possible to identify his medal ribbons from the black and white photo, is it?

You can check this on the National Archives Web Site if you have his Name and Number. |

Thanks for that. I thought you could only get WW1 medal records at the National Archives. Are they on Documents Online now?

Agreed Eddie, although I have occasionally seen a reversed image photo and even a badge stitched on the wrong way around, especially in the fog of war !
