Interesting badge, Mike. I looked amongst Indian Cavalry but nothing similar there. The White Rose looks Yorkshire, the lancers could be East Riding Yeomany (Lancers).
What is the inscription?
Cheers, Tinto

Evening Tinto.......

The inscription reads:

HIMMAT - I - MARDAN - MADAD - I - KHUDA

With a dot between each word....

Mike

Yes, Skinner's Horse. But that is only the short name.

Originaly raised by captain Skinner in 1803 as Irrigular Horse it became after the mutiny in 1861: 1st Regiment of Bengal Cavalry. Later Lancers. In 1899: 1st (Duke of York's Own) Regiment of Bengal Lancers.

In 1901 the words "Regiment of" were dropped from all regiments (also in the infantry): 1st (Duke of York's Own) Bengal Lancers (Skinner's Horse).

In 1903 the the regiments of the three Presidencies were merged in one Indian Army list, dropping their erstwhile Bengal/Madras/Bombay names. The Bengal ones kept their number and the regiment became: 1st Duke of York's Own Lancers (Skinner's Horse).

Captain Skinner became Lt-Col Skinner and raised a second Irrigular corps in 1814. This became in 1861: 3rd Regiment of Bengal Cavalry.

In 1903: 3rd Bengal Cavalry (Skinner's Horse).

In the 1922 reorganisation both regiments were merged and for a short time known as 1st/3rd Horse. Soon this became: 1st Duke of Yorks Own Skinner's Horse.

In 1927 retitled to: Skinner's Horse (1st Duke of York's Own).

On partition the regiment went to India. In 1950, when India became a republic the title became: 1st Horse.

The modern badge is still the same as above, but the crown is replaced by a horsed rider.

Now about the badge shown. It could be of the pre 1922, or of the post 1922 regiment. If those two badges differed is unknown to me (but I would like to know). The 3rd had crossed lances, a 3 on the cross, a crown above and a scroll SKINNER'S HORSE below.

It is possible (but I saw this never confirmed) that the pre 1902 1st had also SKINNER'S HORSE on the scroll. The words HIMMAT-I-MARDAN - MADAD-I-KHUDA seem to mean:
The Bravery of Man! By the Help of God! (found using Google).
