Default Tank Badge, What is it?

Doing a bit of research and editing, I have a question. What exactly is the Tank badge? It is not in Edwards and Langley British Army Proficiency Badges, which would suggest that it is not a trade or proficiency badge. Neither is it referenced in any of my formation patch references as a distinguishing patch for the armoured/tank corps. So, what exactly is the tank badge?

Bill,
If this is what you mean, here is the relevant page from " Badges on Battledress" by Howard Cole, first edition 1953

Hi Bill, I could also direct you to a passage in Clive Law's book "Distinguishing Patches" at page 26 (top part) on the statement by Major-General Worthington which is too long to copy here. It gives the opinions of the 4th and 5th Arm'd Divs. on the subject.

Hi Ray, yes that is the type of badge we are discussing. Jo, I am aware of the passage in Distinguishing Patches, and that is where the question comes from. The Canadian Tank Regiments would in effect have had two distinguishing patches if Worthington is correct. And that was against army policy. No one was to wear two formation patches. The passage from Cole (thanks 8 Foot), seems to suggest that it is more along the line of a qualification badge. So, there isn't a definitive explanation as to the type of patch, and it appears to straddle both qualification and formation patch categories.

Bill if you will permit me to add something. In Brian Davis' book* in the Special Dress Distinctions chapter he writes in the last paragraph on this subject,
"......The badge was originally bestowed on those officers and men who had successfully
completed their training to take their place as a member of a tank crew.......'

As for myself I would treat it as qualification badge. But it's only my opinion.
