Badges like this were worn to show that the wearers were engaged on war work and were not "shirkers ".

Badges to the various railway companies are collectable and I imagine the price achieved for this one is a reflection of its relative scarcity.

The description says Railway War Service, but the badge itself says Railway Service, would that give the holder exemption from conscription?

Bill.

another example;

These type of badges were worn in mufti to donate the wearer was in a reserved occupation. Most but not all did indeed say 'war service'

Not 100% exemption from conscription as the Railway Boards did release men for Military Service.
