Default Post Victorian Silver Brooches

X4 hollow silver brooches.Looking at the fronts they look very Victorian,The hallmarks say later.Hampshire 1910-Worcestershire 1904-East Surrey 1914 RA 1914.
I think the most likley answer is that they did not have to follow officail patterns,Or old stock sent for hallmarking?.Would be interesting to have your views.

Monty,
Would agree on them getting sent for hallmarking at a later date. I have an 18th Hussars one somewhere. One thing that has always interested me is how much (as a % or charge) did it cost or does cost to get done.......

Default Hallmarking cost

Its somthing I`ve never thougth about. On modern silver I think its getting scarce to find a full hallmark,Most just stamp 800 stuff like that.Whatever the cost would of course always be handed down to the customer.
Just going off thread slightly how did they hallmark hollow silver brooches anyway,You would think it would just cave in when the stamping took place?.

I have often wondered about that - especially the 'hollow' HMS silver 6D arm badges - which are quite delicate (from a stamping point of view). Its almost as if they have sent (all or) both silver parts for hallmarking at the same time??

Smile Silver Sweethearts

Hi Monty & Dave

I also have a similar silver sweetheart, however its circular with 10 funny little points. It has the flat QVC and the 21st Lancers cypher on crossed lancers with 21st Empress of Indias Lancers in a scroll around the bottom. Its hallmarked anchor / lion / b / and has the makers mark MB, so its B'ham 1901.

It therefore appears to be a Victorian hallmarked badge with a QVC.

Regards

Phil.
