Can you show or describe the fixings on the back?, This could be to any unit including militia. It may be a tricky one to nail down.

The closest match I have been able to make is an 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars pre-1902 sleeve badge. Ref: Cavalry and Yeomanry badges of the British Army 1914, 1973 edition #261. The badge pictured below is 70mm. Screw mounts north and south. Unless the threaded mounts on mine have been ground down they are not long enough to go through a pouch or cross belt.

The 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards used this type of device on the shabrach (I am sure I have the spelling wrong here, - the richly embroidered horse cloth). Of course it was an embroidered badge in this case.
The pouch badges I have seen in victorian photos to this regiment appear to be the Star of St Patrick. Not a direct answer to this puzzle I know but hopefully it helps a little. |

Well that is the closest one yet. Looks like it is 4th Royal Irish. That being said, If it is horse furniture I would love to know off what. As stated above, I can see the mounts being long enough to go through cloth with maybe a thin brass backing plate, but the mounts are in no way long enough to go through anything leather. The mystery continues
Are we sure the 4th didn't wear arm badges? Hussar, what are the measurements on the arm badges you have for the 8th? The KC arm badge I have for the 8th measure right at 60mm. Michael

Could this be something really obscure, such as a collar badge worn by a member of the Ulster "Governor's Guard" - a detachment of the Ulster Special Constabulary who provided personal protection for the first Governor of Northern Ireland, the Duke of Abercorn. They were stationed at the Governor's private residence at Baronscourt, Co. Tyrone, and his official residence at Hillsborough, Co. Down, and wore a military-style ceremonial uniform.
