Imperial Volunteers?
Was going through some old family papers and found my grandfathers birth certificate. On it it states that his father, my great grandfather, was in the "Imperial Volunteers" anyone ever heard of them?. I can only find info on the Imperial Yeomanry. Would this be the same outfit?. He was born in Northern Ireland.

Michael,
Do you have a date for the birth certificate ? As nobody has attempted an answer, I will. There was a unit the City Imperial Volunteers raised for service in South Africa ( see Westlake The Territorial Battalions Chapter 2 Part 1), but these Volunteers were raised from within the City of London. It may be that other volunteers from various regiments ( for example V.B.`s and Yeomanry ) and other countries of the Empire might have been refered to in general terms as "Imperial Volunteers ". But this is only a possibility The date on the birth certificate might help. P.B.

These badges were worn by Troops who were "prepared" to go overseas to fight if called up. It was a badge of honour .... in a way.
