Default US Armoured patches

Hi Guys,

Can anyone recommend me a good reference book on the triangular US Armoured Division patches (WW2 to Present Day).

Hi, just change the number and you have whatever you want. If you want a history, US Armor-Cavalry by Duncan Crow gives a short but reasonable history of the units involved. WW11, other than the Corps and Divs, there were very few patches. There was a lot made up by tailors on discharge with bat. no. added. Post war virtually every unit had a patch at one time or another, in various forms i.e. post 56, merrowed edged, subdued, tan, and the latest grey coloured patches. What exactly did you want to know? The ASMIC "Cloth Patches of the Armed Forces gives a list of all known patches, not the same as all issued patches. There are some fantasy items about. Hope this helps if you want some pics I will do some, but as I said just change the number. Mike

Mick,
One of the standard works that both illustrates the patches and gives a run-down on each unit's service is Smith & Pelz, Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the US Armed Forces 1941-45, but the trick is finding a copy.

Hi Mick,

Glad you found a reference book for US armor patches. There really were not that many armored divisions in the US Army, 17 I think + 4 armored corps during WWII. There are also patches for units that were never formed. There are also a lot of separate battalion patches, many of which have been reproduced. Sound familiar?

Yeah - sure does

I'm only really interested in the Divisional patches.

Default US Armoured patches reference

Hello,

I am a US Army WWII/KW collector with all but one of the WWII Armor Divs. Here's another website that's a good quick resource. It uses the information from Barry Jason Stein's book.

www.vetshome.com

Go to Army Patches 1>Armor

Like others have said in previous replies, there were only a handful of Armor Divisions in WWII. A lot of what's out there are post war or fantasy patches. There were some Battalions that had their number added to the blank HQ Armor Triangle but those are rare, and therefore faked a lot as well. Also any armor triangle with a darker green border is post war. The changed to the darker color in, I believe, 1958.

Another good resource is a forum similar to this one for US militaria called US Militaria Forum. I'm not sure if you have to be a member to use the reference section, but there's a section on Armored Divisions that shows all that were active with examples of the patches including variations. Here's the link.

http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/foru...p?showforum=29

In the same forum is a great pinned article on real vs fake armor triangles. Here's the link.

Hope this info helps.

Cheers,
Chris
