Default Name The Badge

Several, ok many, years ago I was a member of a US Army Reserve military police unit tasked with the responsibility of operating a prisoner of war camp capable of confining up to 12k prisoners of war. We did not have our own insignia and our colonel decided we should have one. I got the job of designing one. After a long time of staring at a blank piece of paper I arrived at an idea which was submitted to the US Institute of Heraldry which returned the Distinctive Unit Insignia shown below. My question to the forum is which British badge influenced me, as a collector of British badges, to come up with this design? Bonus - where did the motto come from? I will give the answers 1 week from today.

Don

Your DUI at first glance looks influenced by The Royal Armoured Corps, but it also bears similarities to the badge of Clan MacKay.
According to Wikipedia, "With a strong hand" (Manu Forti) is the motto of the Clan Mackay.

Default 403d MP PW Camp

I wish it had been as easy coming up with a design for a new insignia as it was for some of you to identify where the ideas came from. Yes, the Royal Armored Corps. My original design was palm out, facing the viewer, holding 3 broken swords. It came back as shown, with 1 broken sword representing a defeated enemy. The Institute of Heraldry has rules which guide design which may be why the gauntlet is as shown. This is also why the insignia has the shape it does. My design called for a shield. Only units with a fixed organization may use a shield. Think of an infantry battalion with a fixed number of companies as opposed to a brigade with a flexible organization. The colors, green and gold, in the US Army represent the Military Police Corps. The motto came from John Gaylor's Military Badge Collecting, appendix G, Translation of Foreign-Language Mottoes. Again, according to the rules I could not use a foreign language motto, hence the translation of Manu forti. It seemed appropriate when I choose it and, having run a PW camp, it is good advice on how to act, both toward the prisoners and your own people. I have not heard of Clan Mackay before and will have to do some research. Some of the symbolism of my British badges I understand and recognize, and for others I have no clue. All insignia has a story to tell which is one reason this hobby is so interesting. I would be curious to learn who is responsible for the design and approval of design of the British and Commonwealth badges discussed in this forum.

All who answered my query have been declared winners and are awarded a prize which I shall drink for you until such time as I may be able to meet you and we can share a prize together. If any of you have a preference as to what you would like me to consume for you let me know.

Don
