Gaunt - London or B'ham
Hi Gents
Forgive this question, as I'm sure it has been addressed many times but a quick search on this topic brings up so many hits I'm a little overwhelmed. Is there a simple distinction between the London and Birmingham address on Gaunt badges? Does it reflect a time period or is it simply two locations for this maker? Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Cheerio, Roy

I think the London mark was replaced by the Birmingham mark in about 1964. I looked through their archives in Birmingham Library a while ago. I believe that Chris (Hagwalther) had some documentary evidence too.

Thanks for that.
Fingers crossed Chris will post his thoughts. Cheers, Roy

The time line for its use this thus:
Gaunt London plaques on RND, commercial and foreign badges in WW1. Small font JR Gaunt London in use on WW2 era badges incl war-raised cavalry. Found on commercially sold (eg pre 1926 King's 1st Bn) badges in 1920s. Large font London in use from late 40s/early 50s. as above on a/a Gaunt Bham in use early 1960s on a/a. as above on 1970s badges including metal restrikes Alan Last edited by Alan O; 18-08-17 at 05:59 PM. |

Don't forget that the Gaunt Birmingham mark and plaque was also used on 1st VB Leicestershire and other badges pre-1908. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ctureid=109892

The large J.R.GAUNT LONDON mark is indicative of post 1946 up to the early 1960s.

Here is such a MGC badge with the Gaunt mark. However, some thought it possibly issued to Canadian or New Zealand troops. Cheers, Tinto |

Indeed if it was made for the NZ or Canadian then it would have the Gaunt mark where as a WW1 British Army MGC would be unmarked.
The use of the mark on badge supplied to the British Army through the WD should not be marked and I would regard it as very suspicious indeed. Some Yeomanry, TF and Pals badges being bought by Associations are amongst the exceptions. |

Gentlemen, I keep on seeing reference to a clear direction or an order that makers were not to stamp their names on badges - or fixings.
I'd be very interested to know exactly where and when this order was made ? If there is a specific reference at, say in the WO / RACD papers at the National Archives, I will go and look next time I'm there (probably in a couple of weeks). Meanwhile, I'll look up my notes from the B'ham archives. |
