Unknown Formation Sign Holland 1945.
Can anyone please identify the formation sign on the top left of this notice situated at Oldenzaal, Holland in 1945?

First Canadian Army - a gold maple leaf on a red/black/red background.

Jon is correct, except on one detail. The centre band is dark blue (or supposed to be dark blue). The red and blue of the First Cdn Army sign incorporated the red of 1 Cdn Corps and the blue of 2 Cdn Corps.

A Maple Leaf? I thought that it was a wedding cake.

The artist used some licence in painting the sign. The variations in the interpretation of the leaf range widely, depending on the painter.

Actually, I believe that it is black and this is most often seen on armbands. Here is SWW artwork and the Army sign looks black when compared to 2 Corps.

Thanks Clive. I found my copy of the mimeographed list of formation signs for the Cdn army in NW Europe. It indicates both black and blue were used as colours for the background colour/horizontal bar. The black was for HQ 1st Cdn Army, and HQ Army Tps 1st Cdn Army. But, most importantly from the perspective of the above query, the HQ Movement Control unit was black.

I agree. It is a wedding cake. One of over 2000.
