Hi Mike, this is a super old post. How about an update showing all versions in one frame?

Greg

Good suggestion Greg. Is the typing based on a reference, or is it your categorization Mike?

Good Evening Greg and Bill......

This is a list that I made up myself from badges that I have actually seen, handled and measured......

I do not have them all, only 4 but am looking for the others..... You can see from the photos that two of them have been blackened and one that has the lower lug missing and there were small holes drilled into it so it could be fastened with thread......

TYPE ONE - OFFICERS SILVER - STAMPED - FLAT LUGS - NORTH SOUTH - 2.5 Inches x 2.25 Inches

TYPE ONE (A) - OFFICERS SILVER - CUSTOME MADE - FLAT LUGS - NORTH SOUTH - CROSS ON CROWN AND LETTERS IN CANADA, GOLD - 2.43 Inches x 2.2 Inches (Upper left corner)

TYPE TWO - THIN STAMPED - FLAT LUGS - NORTH SOUTH - 2.62 Inches x 2.2 Inches (Upper right corner)

TYPE TWO (A) - THIN STAMPED - FLAT LUGS - EAST WEST

TYPE TWO (B) - THIN STAMPED - REGULAR LUGS - EAST WEST

TYPE THREE - THICK STAMPED - REGULAR LUGS - NORTH SOUTH - 2.3 Inches x 2.1 Inches (Lower left corner)

TYPE THREE (A) - THICK STAMPED - REGULAR LUGS - EAST WEST - 2.2 Inches x 2.1 Inches

TYPE FOUR - THIN STAMPED - SLIDER FASTENER - 2.3 Inches x 2.1 Inches

TYPE FIVE - THIN STAMPED - PIN FASTENER - 2.7 Inches x 2.3 Inches (Lower right corner)

TYPE FIVE (A) - THIN STAMPED - PIN FASTENER - SOLD IN TORONTO AS A WELCOME HOME ITEM - 3 Inches x 3 Inches

Mike

Hello Mike,
Good to see the various types. Thanks for showing them.
Here is the only one I have, it seems different from those above.
Cheers, Tinto

Hello Tinto.....

I would say that this is a Type 2, Thin Stamped with Flat N/S Lugs.....

The bottom part of the Maple Leaf has been broken off..... There is an urban myth that this was how Masons were able to identify each other but I have never actually seen anything in writing.....

Mike

Hello Mike,
Yes, I've just checked my badge and there is a slight roughness where the Maple Leaf stalk has broken off. Interesting theory about the Masons.
Cheers, Tinto

Excellent work Mike, thanks for taking all the pics for the Forum. As I have very little Boer War material, is it possible to put together a complete collection of all Canadian units that were in South Africa for all to see?

Greg
