Default 5/6 STAFFORDS Territorial Army

This badge turned up recently in a large lot of anodised cap badges.

It is (I believe) the infamous (non-existent) cap badge of 5/6 STAFFORDS TA.

It is not made of aluminium but appears to be diecast in heavier metal with two lugs and coated with a shiny gilt finish which has the look of gold anodised but it is not.

Information in older posts seems to indicate that the badge, the Stafford Knot, was authorised for 5/6 STAFFORDS but MOD contracts were cancelled before manufacture, following the the reorganisation of the TA in the late 1960s. However, there is a photograph of it apparently in wear.

A number of badges, similar to my example, seem to be in the hands of collectors and the late Hugh King had one.

I paid about £1.40 for it (the lot cost £140 and was of 90+ cap badges and 10 other anodised collar and rank badges.

I think the consensus was that it was anodised Zinc. At £1.40 you got yourself a bargain.

Nice find. They appear to have been regimentally sourced and not issued by the MOD and as stated a shiny finish zinc rather than a/a.
