Sand cast XIV South Otago Regiment badge
Hello all
A number of years ago I was lucky enough to be given a large collection of WW1 badges by a lady who I worked with. The family had no interest in them and were going to bin them even though they had been collected by her grandfather during the Great War. The majority were UK units but amongst them was what appears to be a sand cast New Zealand XIV South Otago Regiment badge. I have little knowledge of NZ badges so would be interested to know if it was common for sand cast copies to be made of NZ badges. Regards Dennis |

Hi Dennis,
Sand cast badges like this were made In Egypt during WW1. They are not particularly common so this example is well worth keeping in my opinion. Cheers, Tinto |

Hi Dennis
Sand cast badges were made from available scrap brass and manufactured near the front lines for wear, especially Egypt, at times when there was no re-supply of die stamped badges available. I have a few in my NZ collection as I believe they are a legitimate part of any collection as you can be fairly certain that they have been worn in action. Your badge has a lot of character and I agree with Tinto that you should seriously consider keeping it. Cheers John |
