New South Wales Irish Rifle Regiment - OR's Dress Tunic
New South Wales Irish Rifle Regiment - OR's Dress Tunic - circa 1900.
The New South Wales Irish Rifle Regiment was a volunteer unit formed in 1896 as part of the 5th Infantry (Union Volunteer) Regiment. It was comprised of men of Irish birth or descent. In 1897 the Irish Rifles joined with the Scottish Rifles to become the 8th Volunteer Regiment. The Irish rifles were criticised by some for not being prepared to take their share of responsibility in military affairs. Three out of the five officers, however, went to South Africa with the 2nd Contingent. Major Murray, the commanding officer was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment in 1900. The regiment continued as an Irish regiment until 1930 when the title was changed to 55th Battalion, New South Wales Rifle Regiment. Enjoy! Mick
