Default RNAS Airship

Hi

I hope you are not bidding for this one. No such badge existed, even though it apparently has Gaunt on the reverse. Mr B' told me that he knew the person who had some made a number of years ago. They come in gilt & silver finish.

Everything these days has a value. a few bidders at £45 so far and over 3 days to go. Over the years such items will no doubt attract unwary collectors.

Hi RCN

Mr B, the well known auctioneer, informed me that it was a product of someones imagination who then had some made a number of years ago. He then mentioned that he knew who the person was. It is not listed or mentioned in any publication. I had one given to me a number of years ago, it has a gilt finish and looks very professional, fortunately I did not pay for it. Mine did not have a "Gaunt" stamp on the back so it looked less convincing!

I wonder if I should put my badge on ebay, but I would not like to fleece money out of anyone, we have all had that experience of finding "bad badges" we had paid good money for. I noticed one on ebay, probably about 3 years ago, it was in a frame with a photograph of a naval rating and looked quite convincing. That went for over £100.00.

I did email the seller to say that no such badge exists, but surprise surprise he did not send a reply back to me.

John

Well what amazes me is that it sold for 248pounds & had a lot of bids.
So someone wanted it original or not!

I have copied the badge below for future - no doubt it will appear again in future,

Well pointed out, I had never heard or seen of the badge and may have been tempted if not warned, Kev

Hi

For reference my gilt RNAS Airship badge given to me by a friend, thenk goodness I did not pay for it. Maybe I should put it on ebay with a reserve of £248.00, however I would not want to deceive anyone.

Probably a good idea would be to put it on ebay for £0.01 with a not tht it is a complete fake, including any silver versions stamped with Gaunt, except it is a good talking point. I just hope that the person who bought the badge has a friend who reads this.
Having informed the seller, before the sale, that the badge did not exist. I did send a message to ebay concerned that a fake badge had sold for £248.00. I have not received a reply.

It's the same badge, just a better picture. Original listing attached, look at the winning bidder r***l with a feedback score of 12720 and the current lister with a feedback score of 12720 with the letters r & l in their username.

I sent a question to britcoll reference the badge, without stating that no such badge existed. To date no reply!

Question: Why would a British RNAS badge show a German Zepplin. RNAS airships were totally different?

It will be interesting to have an answer.

Interesting the badge appears when a programme on discovery covering the RNAS airships and other world war 1 flight was recently aired.
