2nd Connaughts
I've just read that the 2nd Bn Connaught Rangers was amalgamated with the 1st Bn in December 1914, making it the only Regular Army battalion to disappear for the duration of WW1. Was it reconstituted after the war, or was the old 94th Foot disbanded as of that date? Obviously the whole regiment disappeared in 1922 with the formation of the independent state of Eire,so there wouldn't have been much of a window for the 2nd Bn to be reformed.
Thanks for any help. |

The 1st & 2nd battalions were amalgamated in Dec 1914 due to the very casualties in both battalions.
The 2nd battalion was reformed at Huy on 8th Feb. 1919 by the renumbering of the 5th Bn. The 2Bn was stationed at Dover in 1920 & 1921, when in May it was dispatched to Upper Silesia. John Last edited by John Mulcahy; 23-09-12 at 12:34 PM. Reason: added comment on posting to Upper Silesia. |

2nd Connaughts
Hi, I'm a newbie to the site & will post an intro later, but in reply to this subject may I offer the following (I have no knowledge on military matters, I've got this info due to family history research)
The 1st (88th) & 2nd (94th) Connaughts were amalgamated in 1881 under the Cardwell reforms, at the time the 2nd battalion were in S Africa having been involved in the Zulu & 1st Boer wars, returning home in 1882 and to mainland in 1887. In 1889, the 2nd went to Malta, returning home in 1891, then to Egypt in 1895. Both battalions went to Sudan (under Lord Kitchener) in 1896, with the 2nd going to India in 1897, then to Malta in 1899, followed by home & moving to england in 1914. The 1st went tpo France on 26/9/1914 with the 2nd arriving a few weeks later. Hope this is of some assistance, all the best from Matt. |
