South Stafford and Glider cloth patch
Hi,
I have just acquired a nurses cape with Divisional and Regimental patches included is a South Stafford patch which consists of the title 'SOUTH STAFFORD' below which is a glider both embroidered in yellow cotton on a maroon base. Is this a wartime or post WW2 patch/ thanks Mark |

The patch comes from WWII when the S.Staffs were glider borne troops. When the North and South Staffs were amalgamated (1958)the badge continued to be worn without the title, but mounted on a seperate piece of black backing cloth(facing colour of the N.Staffs).It also appears as a metal badge without title.
Today it is still worn by the Mercian Regt in the form of a cloth glider in gold on a Stafford knot. Additionally the Border Regt were also allowed to wear the glider badge, this was continued by the KORBR upon amalgamation. Last edited by Mike H; 12-07-08 at 08:30 PM. Reason: spelling |

It may have been worn before it was officially introduced in March 1951, sealed in May 1950 as catalogue number CB 2421, pattern number 14347. Declared obsolete in October 1959.

Further to my previous post,
The glider badge is worn by the Duke of Lancasters Regt today from KORBR.It appears in the same form as that worn by the Staffords except that is was not mounted on a black backing. |

Will do, it also has a 'beach ordnance' title, printed pegasus, channel island liberation force plus some more common items.
Any idea on the value of the S STAFFS cloth title? |

That is one nice looking cape!
The value of the S. Staffs badge is around 15 pounds. The Beach ordnance title and Pegasus have a much greater value. |
