Default Pipe Major

Here are badges of appointment for a Pipe Major. Gold coloured anodised aluminium Bagpipes above 4 bar Chevrons worn on a leather wrist strap. The bagpipes are only 15mm high!

Also shown in the second picure is the Drum of the Drum Major's appointment badge - again only 17mm high!

Dave,
Thanks. I did wonder if the bagpipes qualified as "the smallest British Army Badge" - after the Dog Handlers "Paw" badge of course!

Isn't it odd that Black Watch pipers don't wear Black Watch (Government) tartan kilts?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the link

I was very interested until I noticed his P.& P. costs, you might remember from previous posts that I don't do extortionate postgage, I charge £2.25p to Hong Kong, where he gets £6.50p from, I do not know but I'm certainly not bidding on that one ??

I'm sure other sets will come along ??

Dave.

I believe the BW wear Royal Stewart because the are the Royal Highlanders, same as the Royal Scots & RSDG. I didn't think it was the BW because I don't remember them using green pipe-bag covers???
Cheers,
Alex

The only reference I can find ( Regiments of the Scottish Division-Histories,Tartans and Music) says "Pipers of the Black Watch appeared in Royal Stewart at a fairly early date and have done so ever since "

It would be nice to have an album of colour pictures of Pipers to compliment the Pipers Badges Album.

Ive been pondering this for a day or two.The initial photo that Grey Green Acorn posted showed the rank badge for a pipe major below the rank of colour sgt,but 8th foots Black Watch shows a piper major of above that rank due to the addition of the crown. But is there a difference in size between the crowns for a staff sgt and a warrant officer pipe major if they were wearing the wrist strap rank badge ?
