Default Blackcocks feathers- how they fit?

Can anyone please tell me the correct way that blackcocks feathers ( the ones with the alloy bit at the end- as in the attached photo ) fit onto the Glengarry behind the glengarry badge.

I presume it is a bit more scientific than just forcing the item between the back of the badge and the rosette on the glengarry.

Thanks

Shouldn't there be a wire hoop on the bottom that goes behind the tang of the badge. ?

The way do it in our Civilian band (Sheriffs Dept) is open the "blade" at the bottom slightly so that when you push the blackcock feather between the rosette and the cap badge cross pin, it will clasp the pin when you pull it to the correct height. Then you squeeze the blade to lightly crimp the pin.

Hope that helps. These feathers are very easily damaged in storage. My best tip is to store the glen in a manilla folder. The smooth surface will not snag the feathers and the folder keeps it flat.

Philip

Thanks Phillip,

I think I can see what you are saying but isnt the cross pin/split pin inside the glengarry ?

Hi Peter,

I'm sorry to say that this will be absolutely no help at all but I would be interested in finding out if these are sold openly to the public ?

Dave.

I cant remember where I got mine from,it was not E bay and nothing like £20 nevertheless it is identical to the one in the link posted by Marc.

I cannot see how the feathers would fit between the back of the badge on a glengarry and the front of the silk rosette without cutting slits in the glengarry but I assume when someone comes up with the answer if will be very obvious when you think about it.

Peter

Default Blackcock Feather for Royal Signals Glengarry at least.

Bty54 is correct.

Ebay version is the one I have on my little web site.

In the case of the Glengarry worn by the Royal Corps of Signals Pipes and Drums the Cockfeather is tapered metal to fit behind the Glengarry Badge and Black Silk. It just slides into the fitting behind the silk.

I have attache two photos one with the Cock feathers and one without. Hope this helps.

The original photo on this thread does not show the tappering like the one that is on Ebay for sale but that is how it fits behind badges and silk backing.

Kind regards

Chris Walker

Default Blackcock feather

Hi

When I was a piper in the London Scottish we just unstitched the rosette at the top and pushed the BF in. I used to keep mine in a cardboard slider when not being worn. Similar to the hair sporran.

Some were real Blackcock tails - others dyed chicken feathers. The latter tended to straighten out in the rain!

You can buy them from any pipe band supplier. I think my latest was £11 a couple of years ago.

There is usually no difference between an issue one and a civilian one. However seeing the way the governement has cheapened the Highland Regiments dress you might get a better one from civilian sources. Unless of course you want an official Broad arrow wrapper.

Thanks Chris and H,

It seems the feathers were just pushed behind the badge and rosette.
