Default Searching for a soldiers details

Does anyone have access to the army numbers website or pre 1914 soldier records on ancestry.com? (I only have essential which doesn’t include access to these areas).

I am looking for information on a Sgt S Smith 1st Battn York and Lancaster regt who left the battalion in 1906.

Any help offered is much appreciated. Thanks

Ivan

Yes you’re right, a service number would be useful, hence the reason I asked if anyone had access to the army numbers part of ancestry.com.

The idea being that hopefully there will be names AND numbers and hopefully, be able to match a Sgt S Smith of 1 Y&L in 1906.

Just a long shot.

Unless he was awarded a campaign medal prior to leaving you will not be able to pick him up on Ancestry & there is no S. Smith listed in the campaign section of their search for this regiment.
The service records on Ancestry are for the 1st WW only.

I've had a look at what I have access to, which produced about four sets of service papers for S. Smiths in the regiment at about the right time but none made it past the rank of Pte., and none hit 1906 discharge exactly, closest was 1908

Perhaps service papers might not have survived. Any chance he was entitled to a medal? or have you checked the rolls?

Thanks Mike, most useful.

I'll have a trawl through the medal rolls and see what I can find, I suppose there's a slim chance he may have fought in South Africa.

Much appreciated, Ivan

That's what I checked, nothing to that battalion for the period.

Didn't the Y&L have their own regimental journal during this period? If so you may get lucky and find him among those going to Discharge. Another place to look is the Muster Rolls.

Thanks Graham and yes, the Tiger and Rose journal is the place to go as his leaving the battalion is very likely to be recorded. Only problem is that Rotherham Council are in the process of moving all of the Y&L archives from one building in Rotherham to another!

I don't have access to the muster rolls but if someone else has, it would be appreciated.

Thanks for everyone's help up to now.

Ivan
