Can you say what metal it is made of, as the rear lugs look like anodised aluminium.

No epxert - but is it not the badge from above the rank braid on the early khaki RAF uniforms?

The early badges were generally of gilt, and had three screw posts on the eagle. The crown was seperate too, although they faced both ways, normally the eagle facing to the reverse I think.
There was a crowned badge like this, and you see dozens of them as fakes, but no one in the last 30 years has come up with an answer to what they are. I have examples of eagles with the crown soldered to them, and one piece badges made in theatre, both generally being sweetheart badges or side cap badges. Because of the fixing, you can rule out a sweetheart badge, I suspect its a locally made side cap badge, probably produced in India or north Africa, although without speaking to the original owner, you'll never know for certain. |
