I sent an e-mail to a long standing friend, a recently retired (young for the rank) Colonel who huffs that he prefers 'Dominion Day' and considers 'Canada Day' to be of dubious applicability and possibly legality actually in Canada!

Ah well, not far up the road there is a big Canada Day (sic) hooley going on in Trafalgar Square outside the High Commission.

I was only trying to be nice!

I hate to be pedantic, but the building in Trafalgar Square is Canada House; the Canadian High Commission is at MacDonald House in Grosvenor Square. However, Canada House as the name suggests, belongs to the Canadian Government and is mainly used as a showcase for Canada. A common misconception. I always thought Canada House was the HC too. David

It's a very nice piece of real estate that's for sure.

And yes, happy Canada Day! and hope you're enjoying the company of Wills and Kate too.

If you want to celebrate Canada Day in London, try The Maple Leaf Pub in Covent Garden.

I went on Thursday as I knew I'd never get in the door on Friday

And yes, I know the difference between Canada House and the the High Comm. I have been to enough levees at the former... mind you, the bar at the New Zealand High Com has a better view..

Congratulations Canada, I've loved the place - and the people - ever since I first set foot there over twenty years ago. Last year was Nova Scotia, and we'll be back

Thanks to all for wishing us Canucks (and ex-Brits) Happy Canada Day. We didn't bother to go up to Parliament Hill, but watched the royals on TV. Just as well as it was 30C+, and between 300,00 and 500,000 people - so what are you going to see anyway? We did actually get a glimpse of William on Thursday, driving away from the war memorial in the motorcade.

Once again, Peter Mansbridge, the CBC commentator got bearskins and busbys mixed up. Every November 11th he gets it wrong and says the Governor General's Foot Guards are wearing busbys, and he did it again on Friday, only this time he was wrong on both counts. The Air Branch pipe band were wearing feather bonnets not busbys! Surely it's not that difficult to get it right, is it? I must email Mansbridge with pictures of all three headdresses.

Do you mean The Air Command Pipes and Drums?

Hi Phil, yes, I guess that's what I mean. I wasn't sure of their actual title, and no one mentioned it on the TV coverage. I knew they had to be Air because of the Air Force tartan they were wearing. David

Default Canada Day 1 July

Just picked up on this topic.

Was in Ottawa visiting my son on 30 Jun, 1 & 2 July & we headed up to the Parliament Hill area & took in the festivities & fireworks there.
Also I had never viewed the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier before so wanted to get a photo of the grave on this histoic day. The Cenotaph area was pretty crowded at 1900 when we arrived there but managed to get a few good shots.

1 July is Battle of the Somme Anniversary also so took a shot of the memorial wreaths placed there in memory of that tragic battle.

People - LOTS! well over 300K+! Did not attempt to get to Parliament Hill but headed over to Majors Hill Park & it was jammed by the time of the fireworks, my son said best place for a good view & it was indeed a superb view.

So few shots of the memorial...............

Here are some shots of a very small section of the 300K attendees..........

First one taken on Rideau St around 1930.

Next two in Majors Hill Park around 2000....

Last one back on Rideau St after the close of the fireworks....
