Two Essex Scottish badges for comparison. Opinions welcome.

Bill.... I like the roden bros on the right... thinner swords and smoother finish... I haven't handled many of these so I have no comments on the one on the left... thanks for showing Jim

Differences
...hmmm nice comparison of the different manufacturers. The one on the right has obviously lost some detail due to polishing, but the difference can be noted in the lions head.
I scanned my badges...note the size difference in the officers badge on the left. Dwayne |

Very nice Dwayne. My "officers" version is simply the Roden version, gold-plated and pin-backed.

Thanks for the comments.
I am not happy with the badge on the right. It has a very grainy finish, almost like it was from a sand casting, but the badge appears to be struck when viewed from the reverse. There is no makers mark anywhere. Re the Essex Scottish officer's badge. Has anyone ever seen a sterling silver or plated silver example? What is the finish on the piper's badge? |

I have examples in frosted silver, 'hard' silver plate, & sterling. They're all nice badges, but I think the handsomest Essex is the small gilt pattern shown by Dwayne.

Doug, Would the silvered badges (all the varieties) be the piper's? Somewhere this information has been suggested.

Bill,
The embarassing answer here is, "I don't know." It is common practice with Highland units that pipers & WO's wear the officers' type badges. I've never dug into the orders of dress for the Essex & can't comment with any authority who would have worn what. |
