Default 50's Irish anti-Communist group

Has anyone heard of the Black Legion? This photo' was taken in the Liberties area of Dublin in 1952. I know that Mosley moved to Ireland in 1951 but I'm not sure that this had anything to do with him. Any links or pics welcomed.

Hello Lampwick

Mosley had left traditional fascism by the 1950's and was on with Europe as One Nation so you are right that it's nothing to do with him.

The Irish were famed for Greenshirts and Blueshirts and I think some assisted Franco against the communists.

I think the picture is representing something very uncommon.

The chaps at the Gentlemen's Military Interest Club should be able to help. There is a special section for stuff like this.

Cheers

Dave

There was an American organisation called "The Black Legion". I believe that it was actually a "spin off" from the Klu Klux Klan.

Maybe they tried to set up in Ireland at the time of the Korean War?

I am sure that if they had actually recruited 5,000 members they would be as well known as "The Blue Shirts".

If it is something to do with the American organisation I wonder why they even tried to recruit in Southern Ireland, since they were known for being very anti-Catholic in America.

Was there not a film about these guys? Humphrey Bogart ?

Might be available online as it's obviously an oldie!?
Cheers, Neil

Hi Neil. That film was made in 1937 and was set in America. Good call though!

Yes, that is the same organisation, and the film is about them.

The question is, did they try and start up an Irish branch in the early 1950s?

Here is some basic information, that also mentions the film.

It's only wiki, but it is a start:

As it was St Patrick's Day yesterday I was thinking a bit about this thread.

Did you ever manage to find out the answer to your query from any other forum Lampwick?

Sorry for the delay, but I've only just found your post. Sad to say there has been no positive identification of the group as yet. Regards
