Royal Flying Corps
Brought this badge the other day . I love the disc on the rear with the owners details . Even down to his religion " Church Of England " . I surpose I will have to dig into the history of the owner to see who he was Or does anyone know who he was ? . Anyone else have badges with the owners names on the rear ?

Before our present Godless days everybody proclaimed their religion, particularly on active service when you had to make sure you were buried in the correct rites. This looks like a home made version of an official "dog tag" which would have had name, rank, number, unit and religion on it.
Yes, there was a thread about badges with names scratched on a while ago. RFC records are not online so you would have to go to Kew to find your chap. |

No only what is on the back of this badge .
I surpose it's all you would have if you had his medals , Name , number , Regiment , Just not rank . |

In relatively recent years a book has been published listing the personal details and service of every member of the RFC from WW1, officers and ORs. I am sorry that I do not have the title of the book or the author but I suspect that the RAF museum at Hendon might be able to help. The museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop also has a great deal of RFC memorabilia and bequeaths.

Personalised badges
I have a Royal Irish Regt pre 1922 cap badge where someone, possibly the wearer stamped his number (35176) on the inside of the slider. The badge came to me in two parts and I had to re-braze the crown and slider with the harp. Also I had an Essex Regt badge which was so well polished that the white metal had gone through to the gilding metal, on the outside of the slider was the word "BASTARD" stamped. I gave this to a friend who specialised in Essex badges.

What about this for a personalised badge. Someone has taken a post 1926 Kings Regt badge, ground down the scroll and torse and then had Kings inscribed on the middle of the scroll and the initials "D" and "S" at either end - presumably his initials.
P.B.

There is an attestation page for a Lt. Gerald Ealam ELKINGTON who lists his religion as C of E. Joined the CFA in Aug 1918. But he lists his previous military service as 1 yr at RMC so it's probably not the same person.
