Default No.1 White Buff Leather Sporrans

I have what I believe will be an intriguing question for the members of this forum. For at least a decade, perhaps two, I have often wondered what ever became of the white buff leather sporrans which were the prescribed standard (officers and all ranks) for the No.1 Dress Uniform of the Scottish Highland Regiments of the British Army. The belts used to suspend them are available on occasion, but never the sporrans themselves. At one time, circa late 1950's there had to have been thousands. Were they all destroyed, or perhaps hidden away in some obscure depot warehouse, yet to be discovered. I will be very curious to hear of any information regarding their fate.

Default Sporrans

They probably got all shipped over to Canada because most of us wear them! At least in my unit, The Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. A lot of others as well.

A most interesting question, as Arnhemjim has said theses were the issue sporrans in the 1950`s and 1960`s so what has happened to them all. There must have been thousands made.

The occasional one that comes up for sale seems to go for a high figure, my example came from a friend with a connection to the Liverpool Scottish ( see attachment )

Perhaps Colin is right !

It is standard MOD policy to sell as surplus any item declared as redundant, including after changes in dress and clothing regulations once they are formally declared as 'obsolete'.
