GGA.
Many thanks for spotting my error with the price, I knew what I intended to type, but was obviously overwhelmed with the high price and the year of purchase. Regards |

Buying badges!
We went to Malta some twenty five years ago and in a conversation with Hugh King he told me that there were three large collections of badges on the Island and he had bought two of them.
We went into a bar/restaurant in Valletta and the walls were covered in frames of badges, after looking at them for some time I spoke to the owner who said it was a small part of his collection, I think this must have been the one that got away . . ! He certainly must have cut a lot of hair to get his collection, but he was in the right place at the right time. Rob |

I am very fortunate to be the custodian of this frame of badges.
Although specialising in Commando insignia for the last 30 years, I spent the previous 20 years collecting British military headdress badges - with my twin brother and father. We had seen the frame years before it was sold and were in awe that the badges retained their mint finish having been bought for display straight from store. Hugh did add a couple of items to the original frame (2 No. sets of 21st Lancers), but I have left it untouched. I hope the explanation of attribution is helpful. Many thanks for the kind comments - and yes - the price was very high but it is a piece of history having started Hugh King off collecting seriously. Mike |

Mike,
Outstanding and good to know that the frame remains as it was when Hugh King owned it! Definitely an inspirational (if unachievable) icon to every serious badge collector. Tim

Many thanks for your kind words. You are right, it should stay exactly as it was left by Hugh. There was talk that a dealer was going to break the frame up, but that would have been tragic; and in all probability would not have been profitable for them as the true value derives from what they mean and represent. All the best Mike |

Certainly not unachievable, just time consuming and very expensive.

It is certainly a lovely thing to own.

I’m pretty close, I don’t have the Reserve Regiment items which have never really interested me.

Many thanks Frank. I guess I am like the rest of us all ... very much a custodian ... it will hopefully remain intact as a tribute to those who pieced it all together long after I have departed this mortal coil.
I always admire folks who put items together piece by piece, rather than buying a completed collection - it is much more fun and satisfying to do so. But obviously I am very pleased to look after the frame that inspired Hugh. Mike |

Sorry, my mistake, eyesight going, just spotted the two of them, both minus collars.

Yes, but, whilst it is achievable to put together today, notwithstanding the problematic collar badges, you could never have that again, it is unique, you would never get all the badges again in the same condition, nor, it that condition, you could never have that provenance again either, which certainly counts for a great deal.
Okay, so it was a lot of money, so what, it is after all, only money and to go out and buy each piece again at retail, have you seen how much people are charging these days for good cavalry? Quote:

I guess the person who put it all together was just avoiding duplication and triplication - I am not an expert on collars - but that would be my understanding. 10th Hussars and 12th Lancers collars were the same pattern as 3rd Dragoon Guards. I stand to be corrected if there was any slight variance between them. Source is Dress Regulations 1900 pages 81 and 83. All the best Mike |
