Default Royal Artillery Beret

Hi,
can some one please tell me what colour the RA beret is?

Has it always been the same colour?

I am trying to find out what colour it was in the 80's(86/7 specifically),
many thanks.

Default RA Beret

Generally navy blue, with the exceptions of the Commando (29 BTY) and Airborne (7RHA) units I've not seen any other variations, no doubt I will either backed up or shot down in flames, but I'm fairly sure that would be it.

Regards

John

7RHA do wear Maroon after passing P-Coy, Tom Carews book Jihad gives a decent insight into 7RHA's training dress etc.

1970s/80s was dark blue except for the specialist units. Same shade as today.

With such a Gunner-specific user name I am surprised by the question!

Sometime last year 4/73 Bty - an "Observation" Bty - were granted the authority to wear the "infantry" khaki beret, with an proper cap badge (RA).

The Rev is correct, regarding 4/73 but to be accurate it is the HAC (Inf) beret they have adopted, as they are related by role and attachment.

I haven't read 'Jihad' by T. Carew but as this man was a total fantasist, I certainly wouldn't be quoting him as knowing anything usefull regarding my unit or any other.

He's dead, found rotting in a flat in belgium, faked his own death some years back when he was exposed as never having been in the SAS and only spent a couple of years in the Army! went on to work as a mercenary and minder for the underworld low life in brussels. one of the newspapers ran an article by his daugter on him recently.

Bit off topic but thought you migt be interested.

T Carew etc was Phillip Sessarego a "mercenary" "killed" in Bosnia in 1993 (and SAS fantacist) who was found dead (again) in suspicious circumstances in Belgium last year. See the Daily Mail article on Saturday 10 October 2009 for the fuller story.
