Default WO2 But Whose?

Not sure if this has been round the houses before but worth another try.

A WOII badge but whose and what does the S indicate?

Thoughts please.

A real puzzle - at first thoughts throwing in a wild card I wondered if Salvation Army or some such non military - colours not what would be expected for Salvation Army admittedly - as I say thinking aloud with no real idea

Appreciating the knowledge of those who have posted in this thread, a further contribution by me probably adds nothing new - Looking through Proficiency Badges by Edwards and Langley I note 'S' in use for 'Surveyor' ... the two contributors have probably considered this already

Mike,

All suggestions gratefully received.

If I was to give a best guess I would be inclined to think it was for a British Female uniformed branch of the either the Armed Forces or a Voluntary organisation of which there were many.

If it can be narrowed down to a particular service then wee may be able to work out its meaning.

regards

Probably coincidental but in WW2 the tactical markings of Survey Regts RA were typically unit serial (lettering in white on a backing plate predominantly blue but with the top left quarter being in yellow. Examples of these are illustrated in "British Military Markings 1939-1945" by Peter Hodges.
