Default Royal Sussex Lambourne badge

Hi all,

I'm looking to ascertain whether this badge is genuine and the extent of my knowledge is what I've read on here. It is a very poorly made badge, with a squared-off slider. From what I can tell, the font is okay, albeit feint.

Any opinions would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards,

Pete

Cool Squared off slider

Your badge has a more squared off slider than my Cambridgeshire badge, I think it was made in the afternoon after payday by someone with a hangover.

It would seem that many a badge maker had a bad day during the wars. It is a genuine badge nonetheless. It would seem to me that only the big makers such as Firmin, Gaunt etc. turned out consistently well made badges. Lambourne, Woodward and others turned out anything from decent to crap.
I have several different examples with that squared off style slider and now wonder if this was a Lambourne trait.

Hi all,

Thank you all for your replies. I appreciate your responses.

I shall put this down as a genuine example, somewhere more towards the 'crap' than 'decent' end of the quality scale. Perhaps a Friday afternoon special and certainly in the days before the ISO quality standard.

Kind regards,

Pete

Your badge is genuine and from the same die as other examples Iíve seen with the correct Lambourne mark.

If itís too Ďrusticí for you Iíd be happy to take it off your hands as I have a bit of a penchant for their wares.

Lambourne used several different styles of slider during their time, which I personally believe was WW1 only.

My guess is they, at least to some extent, potentially bought these in rather than making them themselves as this would account for the high degree of variation seen. That is purely speculation on my part, however.

It looks a drawn brass slider that you see a few Lambourne badges.

A very nice example.

Thank you all for your replies.

I have placed it into my small, but growing collection of OR's badges (yes, I think there is a Marsh copy in here, for the eagle-eyed).

It never ceases to amaze me how some of the worst examples can be the most prized in this hobby.

There was an example, arguably in better condition than this one, that sold on Ebay recently, which I forgot to bid on and went for a few pounds as there was no reference to the maker in the description, so they are out there!

KR,

Pete.
