Any thoughts on this as a unit?
I have been trying to identify this badge/plate and the obscure unit mentioned on the piece, 1st Derbyshire Mounted Infantry. Mel.
Sorry my slip of the finger and brain...Volunteers. Last edited by QSAKSA; 26-07-19 at 12:20 PM. |

I read
1ST DERBYSHIRE MOUNTED VOLUNTEERS not "Infantry". But I can not find any Debyshire unit in the list of the mounted part of the 1859 and later Volunteers.

Whilst I can't comment on the unit, I can tell you that the centre depicts the early "Lozenge" from the seal of the Borough of Chesterfield.

1st or 3rd (III) ?
Formation of the Derbyshire Rifle Volunteer Corps: 1859 "The 3rd Administrative Battalion formed in June 1860 with Headquarters at Bakewell and under the Command of Major Lord George Henry Cavendish. 3rd (Chesterfield) in January 1860. Edit : During this period there were 'riots' in the region and mention of Police/Militia and "mounted volunteers" being involved in 'riot control'.

I still read it as 1st with a "superscript ST with a short underline. The same (superscript with line underneath) can be seen in many badges.

Thus I want to make my list as complete as possible. Can you refer me to a list of Mounted Rifle Volunteers and Light Horse Volunteers that is more complete? What I have until now is here: https://hcvv.home.xs4all.nl/milweb/G...nges-1860.html

Thank for the information anyhow.
For the Rifle Volunteers I bought Westlake "Tracing the Rifle volunteers", but this seems to be a bit more difficult

Henk, there seems to be a dearth of on-line official Army Lists from the mid 1850s on until the Great War but if you try Hart's Army List on-line I think you might come up trumps.
