Default 56th Regiment of Foot Officer

I would like the help of the forum please to aid me in identifying the officer.

His uniform, in my opinion, is that of a Captain in the 56th West Essex circa 1790 to 1810. The pompadour colour facings, two epaulettes, and a similar coatee in the National Army Museum they date circa 1795.

The back of the miniature has the subject's initials GFG, GJG or GTG, but maybe not in that order.

Does anyone have access to the Muster rolls or Army Lists for the period 1790-1810 please? As it may be possible to short list a few candidates...

I am most grateful for any other suggestions, and thank you for looking

Keith

Thank you.

I had, wrongly, thought all these documents required a visit to the National archives and not on line.

I have started downloading the Army Lists for the period. It is time consuming but interesting and have found one candidate so far...

Hi Keith,

Here is a link to the British Army Lists without having to down load just scroll through the books for the period you are investigating.

I believe the very handy NLS collection only covers the C19th from 1839

A search of the Army Officer Lists for the period 1780 to 1810 shows two possible candidates:

Ensign Francis Gyllett (commissioned Ensign 28 December 1778, Lieutenant 30 April 1784). But does he have a middle name beginning with G?

Ensign Gerald Fitzgerald (commissioned Ensign 6 January 1796, although "discharged died" within six months)
From the London Gazette website. The London Gazette, Publication date: 9 January 1796, Issue: 13853, Page: 39. War Office 9th January 1796. "56th Ditto. Lieutenant Gerald Fitzgerald, from the Loyal Essex Fencibles, to be Ensign, without Purchase, vice Mallett, promoted."
So he took as step down in rank when he moved from the fencibles to the regulars.

In my opinion Gerald Fitzgerald is the most likely candidate, the initials fit, but questions remain. For example the rank (indicated by two epaulettes) should signify that of Captain? So has the artist used "artistic license" in the image?

The plaited hair on the reverse could be symbolic of mourning and would fit with Gerald Fitzgerald.

I welcome the opinion and assistance of the forum ...

Thank you for looking, Keith

The two epaulettes represent his being a member of a flank company, rather than a captain. Those in battalion companies had just one epaulette.

Toby thank you.

So the image could be of an Ensign in a flank company?

Keith

Could the initials potentially also be GIG?

Luke thank you.

Potentially yes the initials could be GIG, but having searched the complete run of Army Lists for the period it is Gerald Fitzgerald GFG there are no other plausible alternatives.
