Prisoner of War work
German POWs on Malta were noted for their highly skilled artistic talents and they would supplement their rations by fashioning all sorts of decorative items out of scrap materials and barter them.
I have a few bits and pieces in my collection and I am illustrating a simple but evocative item. It is part of a picture frame made out of wood, perspex and aluminium. I have omitted the carved wooden base as I cannot scan it. The perspex and aluminium could very well have been salvaged from downed aircraft and handed over. The aluminium base plate appears to have a sunray design. It is 15cm x 4.25cm. The two side uprights are made of very thick perspex (almost 1cm thick) and have an etched floral design. GTB |
