Perhaps it didn't literally mean a cap badge, a reference to the Colours? or earlier badges as Paul has shown?

Default Lancs. Fusileer pamphlet

To Alli and all, I noticed on the front page, top R.H. corner the printed number 20. I would like to forward the idea that the pamphlet is number 20 of a series concerning famous British Regts. I cannot see the "Lancs." having a printed synopsis of their accoutrements and history to be handed to recruits. I also noticed the price at the bottom!! Where necessary, they would get that information drummed into them by the "Big Fella with the stick". Regards, David J.

Yes David your right it was available to buy. In my initial post I did just question whether it might have been given to someone on enlistment as the antique dealer I bought it from believed that was the case.
